Selection of the Kingdom’s candidate to head the Technical Committee of Intellectual Property of the Arab LeaguePublic Relations
The fifth meeting of the Technical Committee for Intellectual Property – organized by the Intellectual Property and Competitiveness Department of the Arab League with the participation of government officials for intellectual property offices in Arab countries – was held today at the headquarters of the League of Arab States to discuss the mechanism of cooperation with international and regional organizations related to the field of intellectual property rights protection, and follow up on the implementation of recommendations of the Fourth meeting of the Copyright Subcommittee and the Industrial Property Subcommittee.
At the opening of its meeting today, the Committee chose the candidate of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Deputy Executive Vice President for Intellectual Property Policies and Partnerships at the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property, Engineer Sami bin Ali Al-Sudais unanimously as Chairman of the Technical Committee for Intellectual Property at the League of Arab States for a period of two years, this came as an appreciation of his efforts and contributions to oversee a number of projects On intellectual property issues.
Dr. Maha Bakhit, Director of Intellectual Property and Competitiveness at the Arab League, said in her speech at the opening session: The meeting comes as a continuation of the efforts that started since the issuance of the ministerial decision to establish the Technical Committee for Intellectual Property in the (97) session of the Economic and Social Council in February 2016, and accordingly several sessions were held, the last of which was in February 2019.
She added that today’s meeting comes in implementation of the recommendations of the fourth meeting of the committee, the most important of which is the adoption of a list of intellectual property experts in the Arab countries, the creation of a mechanism for cooperation with international and regional organizations related to the field of rights to protect intellectual property rights, as well as choosing the chairman of the Technical Committee for Intellectual Property for the second period.
Dr. Maha Bakhit indicated that the Arab leaders at the Arab Summit which was held in Tunisia in March 2019 agreed to adopt the Charter for Science and Technology Ethics in the Arab Region, which was discussed at the meeting.
The Director of the Intellectual and Competitive Property Department at the Arab League stated that the General Secretariat of the Arab League addressed all member states to provide them with the latest legislation on copyright and rights, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Bahrain, Djibouti, Sudan and Iraq provided the Arab League with the laws and regulations related to it.
For his part, Deputy Chief Executive of Intellectual Property Policies and Partnerships at the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property Eng. Sami bin Ali Al-Sudais said in a statement to the Saudi News Agency after his selection as Chairman of the Technical Committee of Intellectual Property at the Arab League: One of the most important objectives of the committee is to enhance coordination on the issue of intellectual property at the level of Arab countries , Unifying opinions and benefiting from the available experiences and capabilities in the Arab countries, and improving the intellectual property system in the Arab countries.
He pointed out that there is a very important reflection of intellectual property on the economy and industry to serve the region, and that the current stage is the appropriate stage to pay great attention to intellectual property, expressing at the same time his hope that the members of the committee and intellectual property officials in Arab countries will cooperate to enhance communication and coordination in The next phase.
On the efforts of the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property in supporting intellectual property rights, whether at the level of the Kingdom or the Arab countries, Al-Sudais clarified that the authority worked on a package of initiatives, including empowering intellectual property, improving the intellectual property system in the Kingdom, building regulations and legislation, developing existing systems , preparing the national strategy for intellectual property, enhancing respect for intellectual property and ensuring its proper implementation, in addition to enhancing the role of Arab countries in benefiting from these initiatives, and exchanging experiences in this field to achieve the best results.
On the role of the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property in achieving the Kingdom’s 2030 vision, the Executive Vice President of Intellectual Property Policies and Partnerships at the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property stated that intellectual property comes within an important axis as one of the strategic goals of the Kingdom’s vision, which is to facilitate doing business, concluding by saying: whenever we ensure the existence of a property system Consistent thought at the national level, we will ensure the facilitation of doing business, as well as the impact on attracting foreign investment.
